A game patch is an add-on file installed over the base game. An adult game patch — also called an 18+ patch, R18 patch, adult patch or NSFW patch — is a modification file that unlocks the adult content, scenes or story restricted in a game. Many Steam releases ship as all-ages or censored versions first, and an official or fan-made patch restores the full uncensored version — the original R18 edition. Common types include official bug-fix updates, English translation patches (fan translations), R18 / 18+ unlock and restoration patches that restore the cut adult scenes, uncensor patches (decensor / mosaic-removal), and fan-made mods.
